In September, I attended the Health Ministries Conference which was held at the San Marcos Hotel in Chandler. The weather was beautiful, the setting perfect and the conference informative. Those attending were Faith Community Nurses and Health Ministers and a small group of us who were interested in health care for a variety of reasons.

Highlights included keynote presentation by Carl Hammerschlag, a recognized author, physician, speaker, and a “ leading authority in the practical applications of mind-body-spirit- medicine”. Dr. Hammerschlag discussed the difference between “curing” and “healing’ a patient as well as disease prediction and prevention versus curing the illness.

Other speakers were Cynthia Saver, president of CLS Development, Veronica Vital, Assistant Professor at Chamberalin College of Nursing and currently president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Phoenix chapter, and Sr. Joan Brown, OSF, whose topic was Earth Care, Soul Care and Health Care.

Presentations included information on Seniors in Transition, Keeping Health Ministry Fresh, and the Stigma of Mental Health through Health Ministry. There was also the opportunity to participate in “The Art of Moving Prayer” with Dr. Ann Boric. Unfortunately, it was not possible to experience everything.

I had the opportunity to meet nurses involved in health ministry from other UCC Churches and, hopefully, will be able to network with them. This was an outstanding conference and enjoyed meeting so many who are well known in the field of health ministries. Carol Story, our nurse, was instrumental in pulling this conference together and seeing that it ran smoothly.
