Non-Medical Home Care: Do I Need It? How Do I Get It if I Need It?
Home care is supportive care provided in your home. Care may be provided by licensed healthcare professionals who provide medical treatment needs ordered by a healthcare provider OR professional caregivers who provide daily assistance to ensure activities of daily living are met. More commonly known as “home health care”.
Can I obtain home care without a healthcare provider’s order?
Non-Medical Home Care is requested by and is paid for by the individual or family.
Home Health Care is ordered by a physician, is task-based and government or insurance funded. Task-based means it is ordered for a specific reason and is usually short-term care provided by a professional nurse, therapist or other provider.
These traditional differences in Home Care services are changing as the average age of the population has risen. Individuals typically desire to remain independent and use Home Care services to maintain their existing lifestyle and remain in their own home as long as possible.
As your Faith Community Nurse, I have referred church members to Legacy Home Care, for care paid by the individual. These individuals were pleased with the service provided and would not hesitate to use them again or refer them to others.
